Rain, rain go away come again another day. That'll be in about a month or three please.

In central Bath we at Bath Business Web Ltd may not be experiencing the problems faced by the good people who live in the Somerset Levels. What we do know is how the weather is affecting some local business, as the rain continues to cause havoc in many areas of the country.

 

Never ending rain in Somerset

Mrs Bingham, the two little Bingham's and I were travelling back from just across the border in South Wales on Sunday.

On our way home, just for a change, we decided to divert off the M4 and travel back along the M48 and come over the older Severn Bridge. The 'thin Severn Bridge' as Bingham junior calls it. Bless him!

For those who travel on this highway, it is more of a dual carriageway. It was quieter than staying on the M4 and greener in many ways, as the countryside was that much closer.


And that’s when I saw them. Completely submerged waterlogged, flooded fields. It was a bit surreal to see cattle fields covered in a lake of water. Gates and other obstacles poking their heads up above the waterline. I really felt for the landowners and so decided to write this blog.




Field are drenched and crops at risk

And that got me thinking, not just about the poor farmers whose land it was, but what about how it was affecting business throughout Bath Bristol, Wiltshire and particularly down there in Somerset.

At Bath Business Web Ltd we work in the heart of the beautiful City of Bath. We can't really appreciate the struggles others are dealing with at this wet wintery time. Most of our staff live in Bath and we have little in the way of flooding. We can only guess what it must be like for those directly affected.

We work in a virtual world for the most part. A world on the internet. That means we are operating 90% of our business online. So no flooding issues in that world. Well not watery ones at least.

But what about the people who are directly affected by the weather? Well let’s think about this because some may not be that obvious.

I have mentioned farmers. I heard on the news today that planted crops, seeds etc. which have already been sown are being devastated or will die off very soon, if the water remains in the fields. Animals  too have had to be sold as their fields have been turned into giant reservoirs.

Vital food reserves of straw bales have been used to block the path of flooded areas. Farmer’s homes, outbuilding and farming machinery is getting damaged by the rising waters.

Beyond the fields private homes have been affected and those who live there struggling to cope with the damage and chaos such a catastrophe causes.



Never ending rain

Peoples homes and properties have been ravaged by water which has destroyed infrastructure or possessions. 

Cars have been  stranded under many centimetres or even metres of water. Water which is often full of bacteria and potential health hazards.

You see water doesn’t consider where it goes. It finds the easiest, sometimes the smallest of channels to continue its journey.

 



No respite just yet

That means it may find its way into sewers and rise up back out again and into a living room or a kitchen. That’s why these people who experience these floods are seen throwing all there furniture and carpets into the garden. As it will all be totally contaminated.

Many roads have been rendered impassable. That means all those who drive for a living. Like some of the many customers at Bath Business Web Ltd, such as plumbers, electricians, tillers, scaffolders, delivery van drivers, taxi drivers etc. etc.

Then there are those who rely on receiving stock for their shop or factory. How does that get through? 
 
What if one of our osteopaths or hairdressers needs to get to a business meeting and their journey is hampered by the floods?






More rain is forecast this week

Some of our customers live in the affected areas of flooding and may struggle to get out to their place of work.

So when one starts to consider what businesses are affected, then there is no end to the numbers of people this weather directly or indirectly affects.

We are being told that this weather is due to continue for the foreseeable future. More rain is expected over the course of the next two weeks. Some action has been taken to try to alleviate the problems people are facing. However, it does appear that the government or maybe even some local authorities have been a bit slow on the uptake.

What I wonder needs to be done in preparation for another winter the same? Because it will happen again.
 

I hear Prince Charles is visiting the Somerset Levels today to see for himself and talk with the people who are still flooded out weeks later. Some having been forced to leave their home.
 



What is it with all this rain?

This weather seems to be just another occasion where we are seeing the varying weather extremes which have been blighting us over the past 10 years or more. 

Remember at the beginning of 2013,  the continuation of winter and spring not quite sprung? Or the ridiculously hot period over the summer?

What about those times when the country was covered in thick snow and bringing travel to a stop.



High winds, torrential rain, all just another part to this mystery of the variety of extreme weather. I have no doubt all the pollution and gasses we fill the atmosphere with are playing their part. There is also an argument that this is what the planet does from time to time.

But what of the future? What of our flood defences? What can we do about rivers which overflow into our fields? How shall we build homes in the future to protect them?

How are we going to protect people, property and crops when we are being told there is a finite budget from government? 






This wet weather is okay for Ducks

This kind of continuous rain is only good for ducks. And to be honest, I am not sure how good it is for them. Not when we then consider all the bacteria and contaminated water which gets tossed around.

What I understand from the jolly people at the BBC is that the jet stream coming across from America needs to change course or something similar to that. Basically we get the after affects of whatever is going on the other side of the pond. Not only do we have to put up with their slang talk, dum sayings and trashy comedy programmes, we also get the leftovers of their weather patterns. How jolly thoughtful of them.

Well I for one appreciate the splendour and grandeur of this fine City. Having lived and worked in many other Cities in the UK, I can tell you that many are predominantly red brick with the scattering of buildings which are built in yellow, dark brown or a very deep red.

None I can think of are quite so uniform and with such a pleasant look as that we find in the yellow sandstone buildings of Bath. And we can be proud of our City with it's sandy colour stone buildings. Buildings which have been built with stone quarried locally since the times of the Romans.

What also makes the buildings in Bath stand out so well are the Georgian style properties with their elegant and often very large Georgian windows. These are rather grand looking windows compared to the Victorian sash style.

Don’t get me wrong I like Victorian houses and sash windows. In fact I live in one now. But if I really had a choice and found the right property in the right location, then a Georgian house would do very nicely.

Bath Business Web's Guide to Everyday Distractions and Multitasking - Focussing on the Task at Hand

Some people will tell you that it is only women who can multitask. And it's usually women who tell you that. But is that truly the case? 

Well actually, none of us can. Multitasking suggest that one person can do two or more things at the same time. This requires the brain thinking of two things at the same time. The human brain however, is not able to think of two things at the same time, let alone do two things at the same time. So no, you cannot multitask whoever you may be.

The actual aim is not so much to multitask, rather to organise a multitude of tasks effectively and efficiently. However, as we all know this is easier said than done. As during the course of a day we can be bombarded with phone calls, emails, people knocking on our office door, unscheduled meetings and so on and so forth. Any number of distractions  can steer us away from what we want or need to do in the course of our daily work.
  

There is a term known as ‘Infomania’. Which is basically an information overload or continuous distractions, such as the phone ringing, answering emails immediately as the come in, colleagues coming to our office for advice etc. Research suggests that these distractions can seriously reduce our mental sharpness, reduce intelligence and decrease our IQ levels by 10 points.

The research carried out by Psychologist Dr Glenn Wilson also found that multitasking and distractions can slow us down and cause brain overload, stress and inefficiency. Dr Wilson said ‘infomania can reduce mental sharpness and those constantly breaking away from tasks to react to distractions suffer effects similar to losing a nights sleep.’

  

Renowned American neuroscientist from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Professor Miller, has found that we do not truly multitask. Rather, that the human brain switches rapidly between tasks. This places a much greater stress on our brains than if we conducted those tasks one after another. Professor Miller's research also found that if we simultaneously focus on two similar tasks, that use the same part of the brain (talking on the phone while writing an email for example) we can overload our brains processing capacity. Which in turn leads to inefficiency of those tasks as we carry them out.

  

All of these distractions can lead to poor performance and greater levels of unnecessary stress.

 

We also feel stress at the fact that tasks are taking longer than expected, as we persist with inefficient multitasking in the hope that we can catch up.

 

Such interruptions can cause frustration and pressure and potentially lead to less resistance to distractions. 

 

These people are prone to poor levels of work related performance and become more susceptible to interference.

 

The more we multitask the more we are prone to distractions and we go full circle.

 

The key is to find focus in our work and everyday business.

 

The aim is to create a personalised routine to mange and deflect distractions appropriately. 

 

It is good to remember that focusing on one task at a time can actually improve intelligence, reduce stress levels, increase mental sharpness and help us become more productive.

 

 

As you become more conscious of this you can plan your day more productively taking into account the tasks you need to complete. You can then manage any distractions and find the focus you desire in your work.

 

Things you can do to help yourself:

• List and prioritise your most important tasks in order of their completion time. Remember you can always review that list at any given moment and change the order of priority as you go on with your day.
• Find ways to avoid distractions or interruptions when working on each individual task.
• When focusing on a particular task make a pledge with yourself that for that time you've set aside, you will devote it only to that task and no other.
• Create time during your day to deal with any unexpected issues or tasks which may arise.
• Manage you day so you create time slots during your day to read the emails which need your attention, rather than responding to them constantly or immediately.
• Have someone take your phone calls or have moments in your day when the answerphone or voicemail does it for you. After all that’s what it is there for.
• It can be useful to create moments in your day to escape to a quiet place where you can be guaranteed to not be disturbed.
• Agree with your colleagues that when your door is open they can have a few minutes of your time and anything longer can then be arranged for later. When your door is closed then you must not be disturbed apart from anything you deem as urgent. Be clear with your colleagues what that may be and let them then take responsibility to make that call as and when it is necessary.
• If you start to feel you are slipping into multitasking or reacting to those distractions, then stop, take a break and refocus your mind on the task at hand.

Take a break to refocus

Divide you day into segments:

• Spend five minutes at the start of or day to organise the day ahead.
• Once a day decide on the tasks which you will want to aim to complete or which are the two or three most important for that day or that week. Don’t overdo it. Be realistic as to what you can achieve.
• Take into account how you will manage any unknowns or distractions before your day starts.
• In the morning create time to focus on your tasks. Everyone has their own approach to organising their time. So think about the best time in the day for you to schedule those tasks. You know how you work. Whether you are better working earlier in the day or later in the afternoon. Ensure you block out at least two time slots where you will be protected from answering the phone or checking emails.
• Around midday, allocate yourself some time to clear up any clutter to help you rejuvenate your mind and enable you to focus on the important matters for the rest of the day. Time maybe to check those emails or telephone calls. Devoting a moment or two in your day to do this will help avoid distractions and mean you are managing your day rather than reacting to it.
• At the end of your day take a moment to pause, take a breath and consider what is working and what is not. Give yourself a moment to reflect on your day. A few minutes just to think about how it has been going. Compare what you wanted to happen with what actually did happen. Consider the meetings that took place, the work you did, the tasks, the jobs, any conversations on the phone or by email etc.

Consider how things are going

Remember to ask yourself: “How did my day go? What success did I experience? What challenges did I take on? What did I learn about how I managed my day? What shall I do the same or differently tomorrow?”
