Bath Business Web has high performing Directories for Tradespeople, Company's, Sole Traders, Professionals, Entrepreneurs and Business People of Bath, Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire - Bringing the South West of England together and suppoting local Business to thrive

Many a business in the South West are starting to slowly but surely come through the worst of the recession. Therefore, it's time to build and improve on business marketing and advertising online.

There are many towns throughout the region which have suffered because of the challenging economic climate. In such places such as Bath and Bristol there has always been a very vibrant retail sector. However, it has not been easy. Some of the bigger names have disappeared altogether. Many of the smallest shops have battled on and have kept going throughout. The South West is home for many other businesses too. Many of which are unique to this area.

So how does one find these businesses? After all the retail sector has a high street presence, which other business don't have. What if I am looking for something a bit more out the ordinary? Or a business that would not have a shop front to advertise itself, such as a stone mason, a Georgian sash window repairer, a hypnotherapist or a lighting specialist? Well, the answer is easy. Because in the South West covering Bath, Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire there is the rising star of the Online Business Directory type.

Even now so many local trades or business owners do not have a website, or a website that does justice to their marketing needs. And until they do, they will not appreciate the benefits it can bring to the profits for the business they own.

Listing your business on an online directory will help the search engine optimisation (SEO) of your website.

That is a search engines ability (search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Firefox etc.), to match your website to the keywords a potential new customer would be typing when they search the internet.

When a potential customer goes on a search they are gong to see our seven local  directories at the top of many pages on all the various search engines.

These local directories such as bathbusinessweb.co.uk not only reinforce the keywords being used, they also help create 'links' or ‘backlinks’ to the website on the director.

Basically it is how you link to another site or how another site links back to your site. A business directory will link to these because the nature of directories is such that it has many websites already, which in turn gives strength and presence to the directory you are using. This in turn improves and strengthens the ability of a local business advertising on the directory to advertise and market their website online.

For local business in Bath, Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire they recognise the need to be in as many places online as they can financially afford. These for the most part cost very little compared to any paper advertising or marketing.

Even the construction, maintenance and hosting costs of a website are incredibly good value for money when you spread that cost over a small amount of time. Your premier online directory such as bathbusinessweb.co.uk or bristolbusinessweb.co.uk are very reasonable considering the benefits your website receives from the many hundreds of backlinks that these directories and all their associated directories offer.

It is vital to know that the prime search engine Google, recognises the difference between good and bad links. What you don’t want to do is place your website details on a poor quality directory with poor or bad backlinks which would be detrimental to your websites SEO. Google has systems in place to search out the strong or any poor links. It will then respond accordingly and if they are poor, that website will sink so low in the search engine rankings, so mush so, that it may as well not have been built in the first place.

Strong links are vital to a business website. Links are a necessary part of the online marketing strategy to get a website highly visible on search engine rankings. So a good business owner will get good, sound professional advice and support from the likes of Bath Business Web Ltd.

Very recently a local paper directory was delivered to Bingham Mansion. I think it lasted three days before it then went off with the rest of the recycling paper. I have kept them in the past, but in our house they sit on a shelf getting in the way and getting dusty. I cannot remember the last time I ever used one to get information on a local trade or business.

I total appreciate that there must be people who do use paper directories to search for a local business. Otherwise companies such as Thompson or Yellow Pages wouldn’t have them printed.

Online directories, unlike a paper directories will not sit on a shelf and get dusty. They are accessible and updated 24hrs a day and 365 days a year. They can be found in your pocket or bag.  Because it’s all in a mobile phone or tablet these days and who hasn’t got one of those?

A Bath Business Directory - A South West Directory - A Bristol Directory - A Wiltshire Directory - An Online Business Directory - An Online Resource - An Online Advertising and Marketing Tool for your Website

There are many businesses in Bath. If you ask what types of business do you associate with the City of Bath, most people would probably say tourism or shopping.

It is true Bath does have a very vibrant retail sector. However, did you also know that the beautiful City of Bath also is the home for many other businesses? Many of which are unique to this area.

Bath Business Web Business Directory Website design and ConstructionBut where does one find these businesses? What if I am looking for something a bit more out the ordinary, such as a stone mason or a parent coach? What if I want to do some market research on bath to discover the level of competitors for a business venture of my own?

Bath Business Web Business Directory Website design and ConstructionWell fear not, as help is at hand in the form of the Online Business Directory. That’s right a directory which you can access online through Google, Yahoo, Bing, Firefox, Google Chrome etc. etc. An online directory which will point you in the right direction for all manner of businesses in Bath.
Bath Business Web Business Directory Website design and ConstructionThere are traders galore, retailers and market traders in abundance, professionals in the building trade including plasterers, electricians, plumbers, roofers, scaffolder’s, architects and surveyor’s. Finding sports trainers, martial arts experts, hypnotherapists, accountants, hairdressers, beauty therapists just couldn't be any easier.

Where are all these trades, businesses and professional services to be found? Well Bath and Bristol Business Web of course. And not just that, there are Business Webs specifically targeted to Trowbridge, Chippenham, Calne, Warminster, Frome and covering all surrounding towns and villages in the local area.

Bath Business Web Business Directory Website design and ConstructionOnline directories in Bath and the South West have taken over from some of the more traditional ways to market and advertise a business. Not to suggest that those traditional ways are no longer relevant. Far from it because at Bath Business Web we recognise that all business need a wider approach to their marketing strategy.

Bath Business Web Business Directory Website design and ConstructionThat means using a variety of sources and mediums to advertise and promote your business. The online directory is specific to online users and websites. The secret is knowing how an online directory can help your business, and in particular any online presence.

Many businesses do have a website. It is true however, that
many do not and until they do will not appreciate the benefits
it can bring.

So what are the benefits to an online directory? Well listing
your business on an online directory will help what we call
Bath Business Web Business Directory Website design and Constructionthe search engine optimisation (SEO), of your website. That is a search engines ability (search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Firefox etc.), to match your website to the keywords a customer would be typing when the search for something they want or need on the internet.

If they were searching for a Hypnotherapist in Bath, then ‘hypnotherapist’ and ‘Bath’ are the keywords they are using. The likes of Google and Yahoo will recognise those words if
Bath Business Web Business Directory Website design and Constructiona Bath hypnotherapist is using them to describe or promote their business within the text of their website.

Bath Business Web Business Directory Website design and ConstructionOn recognising these words the search engine then determines the strength of presence which that particular website has online. The search engine does this in a multitude of ways and one of them is by recognising how well liked or supported a website is. One way they measure this is
by identifying which websites are linked to another website, which in turn is linked back to that website.

By doing this linking from one website to another a search engine will read this online behaviour as two websites which
favour the other, giving each credibility and a higher status.
Bath Business Web Business Directory Website design and ConstructionThe more links you can create for your website the higher that status becomes.

When a potential customer goes on a search they are just as likely to see local directories as they are individual business websites.

These local directories such as bathbusinessweb.co.uk reinforce the keywords and they also create 'links' or ‘backlinks’ to your website. Basically it is how you link to another site or how another site links back to your site.

This can be done in a number of ways. Your site may already link up with the professional body to which you belong. They too may then link back to you.

A business directory will link to you and because of the nature of directories having many websites they link to, this in turn gives further strength and presence to the directory you are using. This then improves and strengthens your ability to advertise and market your business online.

For local business in Bath and the South West you need to be in as many places online as you can financially afford.      Bath Business Web Ltd - Directory

Even the construction and maintenance costs of a website are incredibly good value for money if you spread that cost over time. Some advertising mediums are free, such as Google Places. Reputable online directories such as bathbusinessweb.co.uk are very reasonable considering the benefits your website receives from the many hundreds of backlinks that this directory and its sister directories around the South West, offer your website.

Warning
Good businessmen and businesswomen of the South West, I want you to pay attention because this is very important. The prime search engine Google, recognises the difference between good and bad links. You can land up placing your website details on a poor quality directory with poor or bad backlinks which could be detrimental to your SEO. It has been common practice amongst many SEO companies to sell 100’s of directory listings and as many backlinks. All of this can sound very impressive and customers are often drawn in by the overwhelming numbers involved. Have you never heard the saying, ‘less is more’? In this case we are talking quality, not quantity.

Often these companies use automated software programs which can result in poor quality sites and poor quality listings. Google will see that and respond accordingly. That’s because there are links which are better than others or links which are not useful or can decrease the visibility of a website. Google will recognise these and penalise you if you have links to them. Links are a necessary part of your online marketing strategy to get your website up those search engine rankings. So this is where good sound professional advice and support comes in.

What an online directory and good backlinks do is:
1. Send valuable traffic (visitors) to your website
2. Inform the search engines that your website is one that is commanding

How an online directory helps you:
  • Increase your website’s exposure to a larger demographic
  • Increase the number of people who are able to find your business, its products and services
  • Enable potential customers looking specifically for something you offer through the use of keywords go straight to your website
  • Exposes your business to another pillar of marketing and advertising, as wise business owners have an array of marketing outlets
  • Potential customers can access an online directory anywhere, anytime. Whether that’s from home, work, on holiday, from anywhere in the world

A reputable online directory will add legitimacy and credence to your website and add value to your marketing campaign

When consumers use an online directory their perception will be that the businesses listed are professional and recommended.

The SEO of your website will benefit as the directory will create an effective inbound link which will help increase our page ranking on search engines.

Online directories, unlike a paper directory, do not just sit on a shelf at home or in the office. They are accessible by people all the time and at no inconvenience whatsoever. No need for extra storage space in the rucksack or handbag. It’s all in a mobile or tablet. And who hasn’t got one of those?

Remember in days gone by potential customers only had paper directories to look up local business. It was often a laborious task and sometimes very frustrating when you’re looking up a local taxi firm and in the book they are listed under mini cabs. Then trawling your way through the small print, large adverts, smaller adverts and not one of them giving much more information than a name and number.

Well those days are still here, except now we also have online directories which help you go straight to what you need. They display the information and direct online booking procedures not possible with a Yellow Pages or other paper directories.

Bath Business Web Ltd - Video Testimonials

So business people of Bath, Bristol and the South West make sure you are not missing out and if you have a website take a look at your local business directory and if you don’t have a website, then get real and get one built.

The Benefit of Online Directories

Print, radio, television and traditional advertising mediums are beginning to fall off the map while the internet is taking over. Advertising online, on mobiles, tablets and PCs is fast becoming the only advertising needed for small and large businesses alike.

These days, everyone and everything has an internet presence, from Facebook and Twitter to websites and the increasing media of online directories.

The internet and its ease of use, has made it quicker than ever for people to find a local business and its contact details, while  also researching their work and reading reviews.

Online Directories are now the place where all of this important information can be found. Sites like Bath Business Web, Freeindex and Scoot help businesses connect with potential customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and joining an online directory has been proven to be one of the most effective tools to help a small business’ website get noticed on the web.

Online Directories perform especially well with “longtail search terms” which are more detailed or descriptive phrases that people use to search for something or someone online.
For example: “Walcot Street Italian Restaurant”
Because the listings in the directory are usually comprised of these terms, or very similar, and comprise of categories, sub categories and keyword descriptions they perform very well in online searches.

Having your business website linked on the listing is also very beneficial, forming a “backlink” from a well-known and trustworthy source, further driving your website’s results up in Google. It also brings more traffic to your site and gives a better chance of you being contacted by a potential customer regarding your services.

Many of our directories category pages have front page results on Google, meaning that certain search terms, such as “autolocksmith bath”, will bring up the Bath Business Web Online Directory. In one morning, we received four phone calls regarding services registered on our directories, had we any registered businesses on these categories – they would have received those calls instead!

Online business directories are getting better and better, giving local, immediate results to potential customers. With the internet unlikely to be going anywhere, it is vital that small businesses invest time and money into an online presence, including social media, websites, online directories and other forms of online advertising.

What success have you achieved from online advertising such as directories? Do you ask your clients where they found you? How do you track your online responses?

Weekly Update

Bath Business Web logo
It's been a busy week at Bath Business Web! Firstly, as part of our web design package, we give customers support and maintenance for their websites as well as doing the design and hosting work.

That means our customers can come to us and discuss updates to their content, such as adding videos or testimonials, as part of their support contract. Our team make constant tweaks and changes in line with customers needs. When you have over 300 clients that means an ongoing stream of work for our web designers and information writer (aka me!).We love it though, keeping their websites fresh and performing well is the core of the business.

Along side those small changes, every so often a customer needs a major overhaul on their website. They may be shifting their business focus in a new direction or re branding, whatever the reason we are more than happy to take on redesigns and rewriting.

Finally, we are always pushing for new growth and that means new clients. Our custom built websites are focused entirely around the customers business and their expectations. The finished product is checked and approved by the customer before it goes "live".

So I am pleased to share with you the revamps and new sites we have finalised this week.

Patrick from Just Carpentry popped in and discussed his existing websites from us for Bath, Marlborough and Trowbridge. A content overhaul was in order and we were pleased to have everything up to date for him by the end of the week.

Chris Pritchard Roofing has gone live and we will be monitoring it closely to make sure it is ranking well in the next few weeks.

A&G Automation Ltd is a long standing client who's newest site is now live and ranking on the search engines.

5 search engines you never though to try...

We're an Internet savvy culture now. Even those of us who cheerfully admit to being hopeless with technology know what an email is for (although maybe not how to open one!) And we all know about Google

Google is THE search giant, the biggest and most well known of the search engines, the King of the SERP's (Search Engine Results Pages). It dominates Internet search, commands  respect from  web designers hoping to make it to the fabled Google Front Page for their customers and has even gone toe to toe with the heavy hitters of the mobile phone world.

But the Internet is a far more mysterious place than it at first appears. Buried far in the corners, in the damp dark places hidden by Google and Windows, there lies the alternative search engine. Strange things with unfamiliar logos and confusing names that shuffle and scurry in the shadows. Most of them are for niche subjects, like Slidefinder which comes in 35 languages all dedicated to finding a truly bemusing number of PowerPoint presentations on any subject, or Retrevo, your go-to search engine for electronics. Knowing what, and where they are can make for a fascinating trawl through the Internet.

Lets drag the top few of them into the light.

5) Brainboost
Brainboost search image

This remarkable engine not only gives you the answer you are looking for, in plain English, but also gives you half a dozen links to related questions that your original query might prompt. So from "why do birds fly?" we get a concise answer and a prompt to further questions from the philosophically fascinating "If a fly can fly can a bird bird?" to the science teachers next paper "What bird do not fly?" Grammar errors excluded, that's a pretty good range of followup questions.

4) WorldCat
WorldCat search image

Brilliant for students and the studious alike, this engine is quite simply a library finder. Think of a book, any book, type it in and let WorldCat find it for you. Tap in your location and it will find the nearest copy. In a world of electronic information this may not seem that useful, but it bears remembering that a great deal of books aren't electronic and most older papers and books needed by students will also fall into that category.

3) Dogpile
Dogpile search image

Dogpile is what's known as a meta search engine. This means when answering your searches it grabs relevant information from many other search engines, including Google, Bing, Yahoo!, MSN and so on. This is important when you realise that websites have to be submitted to a search engine before it can display them in search results. Since popular search engines vary between countries and preferences vary between web designers, it's nice to access all the other engines at once and without having to go looking for them.

Dogpile search results image

2) Wikipedia
Wikipedia search image

Originally considered as an on line encyclopedia, Wikipedia has blossomed and grown from these humble beginnings to become a monster of search in it's own right. Estimating over 4, 000, 000 articles in English alone, with more being added every day, it is hard to imagine a search term that isn't represented somewhere. Whilst the quality of the information in the return may sometimes be suspect, owing to the Wiki gimmick that allows anyone to edit it's pages, there are always useful links to be found and often the information itself answers the search query sufficiently. Plus, you generally learn something new whilst searching! Beats scrolling through pages of unhelpful SERP's looking for an obscure company name or definition.

1) Infomine
Infomine search image

This powerful engine deals in the other world, the world which search engines traditionally are forbidden to enter. Known as the Invisible Web, the Deep Web, the Undernet and other spooky and tempting names, it is the home of password protected library databases and company intranet that is private and uncrawled. Whilst not illegal to search these things, the spiders and bots that work for Google and friends do not normally have easy access and so ignore them. Estimates on the amount of info hidden in this Deep Web are staggering - around 7,500 terabytes were thought to be lurking there back in 2001. If information is currency, there's gold in them there hills... plus, you get to feel like a movie hacker whilst using it!

Businesses, say hello to responsive web design.

Responsive Web Design and why you should care about it

A new era for web design
A few years ago, most of us were getting used to the Internet. Information was available from our home or work computers at a rate we could never have imagined. The machines themselves were solid constructs, proudly dominating our desks and snaking their cables across the floors.

Now, we look back on those early days fondly, with an amused shake of the head. Bulky monitors and desktop PC's are replaced by slim high definition and tiny network docks. Cables have gone entirely, with wireless taking their place in offices all over the world. Thinking that the future was here, the web design community settled down in their sleek new work spaces and relaxed.

Even with the introduction of laptops, things were stable. The screen sizes on a laptop were nearly the same as those on a PC, and with a minimum of fuss users could scroll the web pages along if they needed to.

Along comes an apple...
In 2007, a revolution in computer technology appeared in the shops. The Apple iPhone had landed, and mobile Internet was born.
from wikimedia commons
The challenges were formidable. Firstly, these devices were odd shaped and strange sizes, compared to the previously dominant PC and laptop screens. Secondly, they were popular - by the fourth quarter of 2008 Apple reported 6.89 million sales. Thirdly, they were the tip of the iceberg. Google responded in 2008 with its long secret Android mobile phone. More devices that used unusual screen sizes and resolutions such as iPads, tablets and netbooks became used to regularly access the Internet. Not to mention the new HD screens of huge size that people could plug modern computers into - think a 42'' TV being used as a monitor!

What they did about it
Originally, they did something that was not very clever. Web designers all over the world began churning out "mobile versions" of their websites. Try to access a website and you would be redirected to a much smaller version with low quality graphics and basic information.

This wouldn't cut the mustard for long, especially in a market that was being sold its new iPhones as a viable mobile Internet. In May 2010, this article appeared by Ethan Marcotte, and changed the way web designers thought of the mobile web entirely.

Welcome to Responsive Web Design
The idea was relatively simple - why not make a website that can change it's size, shape and resolution based on the size of the screen that is trying to look at it. Simple it may be, but the technology behind these changes is impressive. If you've used a smartphone to read a website which has appeared perfectly easy to read, chances are you have witnessed responsive web design in action.

So what does all this have to do with your business?
You want your website to be as accessible and professional looking as possible. You want people to enjoy browsing it, no matter what device they use to do so. You need responsive web design, and most of all you want a web designer that can do this for you.

Bath Business Web now offers all new customers responsive web design as standard. So you can guarantee a professional, modern browsing experience for your customers, whatever they use to reach your site.

5 Small Business Secrets you might not know

Bath Business Web - web design and online local directory listings

5 secrets to growing your small business

So you've made your own company and you're all ready to start getting customers. Maybe you've taken on staff, or are just working for yourself. So how do you start getting people's attention and building that all important customer base?

5) Make the most of what you have.

So you can’t afford an office space? If you have a computer and a phone, the world is your office! Make some space from your living room, set up your laptop in a cafĂ© or just work from the comfort of your car.

Sometimes, paying huge sums for an “essential” resource can be avoided just by changing the way we look at the world, and help us save for those things we really do need.
Small business home office - by Stubacca
No room too small

4) Great customer service means serving more customers

There’s no doubt about it, people will always return to businesses that provide a high standard of customer service. What isn’t so obvious is that amazing service often comes down to attitude as well as “what we can do for you”.

A smiling, helpful person who genuinely cares about our needs will get a much better response than someone who can answer all our questions but does so in a rude or dismissive way. Teach your staff (and yourself!) to throw on a smile and want to help, and watch your customers return to your business time and time again.

3) Good branding = Good Branding!

Branding is a combination of logo, business message, website and everything connected to it. A powerful brand will stick in the mind, a weak or inconsistent brand will not. Think about statements that are instantly recognizable – “I’m Loving It” or “Every Little Helps” are examples of branding that has become part of the nation’s consciousness.

Whilst your business may not be large scale, you want to create an interesting brand and keep it consistent throughout your company, from stationary to van advertising. Remember – pick something you can be proud of, as re-branding is time consuming and expensive!

2) Keep your campaigns straight

Every company needs a marketing strategy, whether it’s word of mouth at the local markets or an international social media campaign. The trick to any marketing is planning. Decide what your marketing goals are (e.g. more website traffic or more personal recommendations). Work out when and where you are going to do your marketing, and how often. Make a schedule and keep to it.

Most importantly, once you launch your marketing campaign you need to make sure it is consistent across every platform that you use. Use your branding freely, keep the phone numbers and email addresses current and checked regularly. If you change something like an office address or a logo, make sure it’s changed everywhere that it appears. Consistency is the key.

1) Establish an online presence

When people want a product or a service, the vast majority of them turn to the internet to help them meet their needs. Any business, no matter how small, can benefit from having a website that is easy to access and looks professional. Appearing on the front page of search engines like Google and Bing will attract visitors to your website and your company. Your website is your gallery, your show home, your market stall.

By having a well-designed, well maintained and effective website you show potential customers that you are modern, efficient and professional. More visibility means more potential customers, and so the awareness of your business can grow. Using a company like Bath Business Web to create a website and list it in their detailed online local directories is a great start for any small business.
